On January 16, our city marked the 10th anniversary of the MLK Day of Service in Athens. What a day! The weather was a bit chilly and cloudy, but that did not stop over 750 people volunteering at 36 projects sites to make it a Day On and not a Day Off.
One of the highlights of the day began early in the morning with the Drum Major for Service Award. This year, Community Connection recognized Donna Line as the person who has logged the most volunteer hours on the HandsOn Northeast Georgia website (www.handsonnortheastgeorgia.org).

Ms. Line is a volunteer crisis counselor with The Cottage Sexual Assault Center in Athens. By raising awareness about violence and sexual assault, Donna is making Athens a more peaceful community. Dr. King said, “Say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace…” So, every year Community Connection will be awarding the Drum Majors in Athens who, like Donna Line, turn their compassion into action.

TO OUR FANTASTIC MLK DAY OF SERVICE VOLUNTEERS: Thank you so much for making this year’s observance of MLK Day a success. You are helping build Dr. King’s vision of the beloved community!

The following post is from one of our board members, Ashley Harp. She also chairs our SingleServe program. As she refers to it, SingleServe is all about volunteering for parties of 1. I read this post on her blog this morning and couldn’t pass up the chance to share this amazing story. If this doesn’t inspire you to serve, I’m not sure what will!

Whenever I tell someone about SingleServe, one of the questions I inevitably get asked is whether or not the volunteering has led to matchmaking. Although it wasn’t really my vision for SingleServe to be a do-gooder’s Match.com, the query always comes up, and I always just smile and say no. But the truth is, maybe I should start saying yes.

See, about four years ago, when SingleServe started, I met Nikki Smith. She came to one of the first meetings when we were trying to figure out exactly what we were doing. Lucky for me, even though we didn’t quite figure anything out, she kept showing up – to our first project at the MLK Day of Service and then to Bike Athens and the Classic City Roller Girls and ushering at the Morton Theater.

Before long, we were hanging out in between SingleServe events. Becoming part of each other’s lives over dinners and happy hours and fro-yo. So much so that Nikki Smith came to my family’s Thanksgiving this year. And she was my date to the company Christmas party. This picture is from my 32nd birthday party this summer. Now, the two of us are training for a 5K because exercise is really only tolerable with the best of friends by your side.

When I think about it, what I really hoped for when I started SingleServe – aside for doing great things for the community – was friendship. Finding people who were around my age, facing similar situations in life, who were just generally great people. Meeting while volunteering and becoming more than people who stood side by side pulling privet. I can honestly say, as I look toward our fourth MLK Day of Service on Monday, that whether or not SingleServe ever leads to a date for our volunteers, it’s already led to true love.

Here’s to friends who didn’t know what each other looked like without work gloves and with makeup for almost a year. Here’s to SingleServing.

Join us on Monday by registering here. You just might find a friend for life while you’re planting a tree.

Plans for the MLK Day of Service are really coming together. Looking forward to the Kick-Off Breakfast at the 40Watt. I’m going to bring cans of baby formula for the community food drive at the breakfast. All the canned goods are going to the Food Bank. Go Athens! Rumor has it – The Heap will be playing at the Kick-Off Breakfast (actually, it is not a rumor, they really will be playing). Can’t wait to hear them. They have a funky/jazzy style.
It’s going to be a great day. There are 32 project sites all around Athens and Oconee County. Volunteers will be planting trees, recycling computers, building playgrounds, and sorting donated clothes. It’s definitely going to be a day ON and not a day OFF – a good way to spread Dr. King’s message of doing for others. The projects are online already so you can pick which one you want to do: http://handsonnortheastgeorgia.com/athensmlk/
In the afternoon, at Weaver D’s, the ML5K Run starts. I have two friends who are really looking forward to the race. They are running enthusiasts. Me? I will be there at the end of the race cheering them on and treating them to some Weaver D’s!
See you on Jan. 16.

What a night! Monday was R.E.M.’s CD Release Party in Downtown Athens. The festivities began with dinner at Cine. Local eateries prepared and donated delicious delicacies for the event. I volunteered to serve food and bus tables, so I got to do some sampling. Yum. Just one of the perks of volunteering!

The most exciting item on the docket was a mint black & white Rickenbacker guitar signed by all four members of the band. Pete Buck plays a Rickenbacker – I know right! As always, the band donated the proceeds of all the events to local nonprofits. This event’s recipients were Family Connection/Communities in Schools/Whatever It Takes and, yours truly, Community Connection. Thank you, R.E.M.! As Jeff Montgomery of AthensMusic.net said, it was a salute to, not only the band, but the Athens community as well. It was awesome listening to the music and being in a room full of R.E.M. fans, but it was bittersweet, too. After all, it was the band’s last party. What a night!

19,499!! – that’s how many volunteer hours have been accrued so far during all of the MLK days of service in Athens. Amazing! Check out the website http://athensmlkday.org/ and the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/athensmlk I think its great how a small city like Athens has so many caring people willing to spend the day helping others. Volunteering on MLK Day is an admirable way to celebrate the holiday. After all, observances for other holidays like Labor Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day have been reduced to sales at the Mall. To help you observe the holiday the right way, the MLK Day planning committee is meeting today to discuss volunteer project sites along with plans for food and music. This year’s MLK Day, on January 16, will be the 10th anniversary of Days of Service in Athens – 19,499 hours and counting! Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urging question is: What are you doing for others?” The MLK Day planning committee can help you answer that question.

As many of you may know, HandsOn Northeast Georgia is one of the three programs operated by Community Connection. If any of you have visited our office, you know that it, well, has character.

Shortly after I started working at Community Connection I was fishing around in one of the storage spaces in our current office. That storage space happens to be inside the shower that’s inside our bathroom. Yes, there’s a shower in our bathroom. Strapped for space, we’ve repurposed it as storage. Apparently, I’m the only person in the history of this office to accidentally turn on the water in the shower. Luckily, all I did is get some packages of napkins and paper towels wet (thank goodness!) and spared the boxes of more important things that were on the other side of the shower.

So, NEEDLESS TO SAY, we are SO excited to announce that we will be moving on December 1st into a new building!! No worries, we’ll just be on the other side of Broad Street from where we are now in the Dickens Building. We can’t wait to have you come visit us there!

About Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage:
After R.E.M. ignited the blogosphere on September 21 with the news that they had decided to “call it a day as a band” via a statement on their website, the beloved band have announced that they will release their final album, R.E.M., Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982 – 2011, on Warner Bros. Records on November 15, 2011. The album is a 40-song career-spanning retrospective that collects, for the first time ever, songs from R.E.M.’s entire back catalog, including the pioneering American band’s years on both the IRS label (1982 to 1987) and Warner Bros. Records (1988 to 2011). A brand-new song, “We All Go Back To Where We Belong,” was released on October 18.

In addition to liner notes written by band members Berry, Buck, Mills, and Stipe, the album also features three new songs that R.E.M. finished after they completed their last album, Collapse Into Now: “A Month of Saturdays,” “We All Go Back To Where We Belong,” and “Hallelujah,” which were recorded over the summer in Athens with Accelerate and Collapse Into Now producer, the estimable Jacknife Lee. The band came roaring back with those two albums in the last two years, achieving some of the best reviews of their career and enabling them to go out at the top of their game.
